As a huge sports fan, I rearrange my schedule every March to follow the NCAA men's basketball tourney. Even though my Michigan Wolverines haven't been there in the last decade, I manage to buy into the drama and pageantry of the annual tournament.
I'm watching the Midwest Regional Final as I post this, watching tiny Davidson (student population - 1600) take on blue chip Kansas (student population - 21,912). The differences between these two schools are stark, and go far beyond their respective sizes...
Kansas - #1 seed, winner of 2 national titles, 12 final four appearances, and a historic list of alumni including Danny Manning, Wilt Chamberlain, Paul Pierce.
Davidson - #10 seed, have only participated in 10 NCAA tournaments, never been to the final four. Alumni - um....President Woodrow Wilson, but I don't think he ever played basketball.
So as I watch this game wind down, I'm finding myself rooting for Davidson. Something about David vs. Goliath.....something about a guy named the "white lobster" (what does that name even mean????)
stephen curry, not getting any offers from ACC schools....
regardless of the outcome, Davidson has carried the Cinderella torch farther than expected....beating blue-bloods Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin. do they have enough in their tank to overcome Kansas? I hope so, and I'll be nervously watching the next 3:31 to find out.
